On 17 February 2024 Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 October 2022 on a Single Market for Digital Services and amending Directive 2000/31/EC (Digital Services Act) became came into effect. The Digital Services Act (DSA) applies to providers of intermediary services, such as internet service providers, domain name registries and registrars, cloud service providers and online platforms, including social media platforms and online marketplaces. The DSA also lays down due diligence obligations for a transparent and safe online environment. The scope of providers' obligations depends on the type, size and nature of the intermediary service concerned. The DSA makes providers of intermediary services responsible, among other things, for limiting the spread of illegal content and illegal products online, introduces greater protection of minors online and gives users more choice and better information. A specific set of obligations applies to very large online platforms (VLOPs) and very large online search engines (VLOSEs) which have on average at least 45 million monthly active service users in the EU.

The Act Implementing the Regulation (EU) on a Single Market for Digital Services has assigned the tasks of the Digital Services Coordinator to the Agency for Communication Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia (AKOS). The Digital Services Coordinator is an independent body responsible for the implementation of the DSA and for the supervision of intermediary services established in its country, while ensuring the coordination of activities at the national level and cooperating at the international level, in particular with Digital Services Coordinators from other EU member states and the European Commission, which is in charge of the supervision of VLOPs and VLOSEs.
